RUNNING THE ROPES; My introduction to MSW
OFF CAMERA
Like it was revealed in the most recent promo aired by her, Anne Grayson, she's 22 years of age but came into the business at 18; the moment that she legally could. But her love for wrestling came when she was 7- it was the first visible memory that she had of actually seeing it. Her father (Justin "Giant" Rowe) took her and her mother to see him wrestle live at an event in Chicago, Illinois. The date was March 19th, 2001, her birthday. This was no rinky-dink, run of the mill independent promotion either. This was the big time. Sold out seats everywhere you looked, it was actually quite intimidating for her at that young age. But her mother being there with her and getting to see her dad live made it all worth while. He wrestled against his arch nemesis that night, a man by the name of Kain. He was a tall man like her father, built to be very intimidating as well. He had no hair and looked like he just wanted to really hurt her father. She was scared when she saw her father getting beat up but she was ever-so happy when she saw him get back to his feet and keep fighting. All she could do was cheer him on in the main event the best way she could-- "GO DADDY! BEAT HIM UP!" And he loved every minute of it.
Seeing his little girl right there in the front row, excited to no end. Then he called for the finish, the G-Bomb he called it, a big Jackknife Powerbomb that nobody was known to kick out of- and he won. This was her first, and her fondest memory, and it didn't end there. He came down to ringside and he picked his little girl up on his shoulders and gave her his title to hold onto. He helped her into the ring and he followed. And there they stood, father and daughter, middle of the ring, thousands of lights flashing and he picked his little girl up, she sat around his neck and she held that World Championship up so high with the biggest smile on her face that you ever could see on a child. That was the moment that the little girl known as Anne Rowe would set out on her path to become the woman that stands with Missouri State Wrestling today known as Anne "Flying" Grayson. She was always daddy's little girl but he knew she wanted to be that wrestler- that she wanted to be in the main event and hold the championship up high just like her father did with her- so he couldn't be easy on her once training started. She knew it too.
>>>>>>> Fast Forward to December, 2015. The Emerald Academy in Kansas City, MO.
"COME ON! HIT THOSE ROPES!" he yelled. It was her father as he stood outside the ring yelling to get her moving. She breathed heavy but knew she had to keep pushing herself. Everything she had done, everywhere she bad been, be it Illinois, Georgia, Florida, Iowa and everywhere in between, they were nothing to what she was aiming for. She wanted to work with her dad in Missouri State Wrestling and be among the best. When she saw Artemis Kaiser and Kat Jones go neck for neck at Back to Basics, it inspired Anne to get even better. She knew Women's Wrestling was at the pinnacle of the sport in this company and with the company in talks of coming back, Anne wanted to be there. "KEEP IT MOVING! FIVE MORE SETS! LET'S GO!" And Anne continued to go. Hit the ropes on the left, hit the ropes on the right, roll forward with a quick bounce up to her feet, hit the other two ropes and back bump, get up, hit the first two ropes and flip bump. That was one set for her cardio.
He encouraged her to keep going when nobody could. He was her hero and he was the reason she was training in that ring with him. And never once did he ever give her special treatment from any of his other students. After Cardio they spent some time working with bumps, punches, kicks, spots, everything you could think of. Anne wanted to be the best, no matter what. She saw the powerful women like Kat Jones, Artemis Kaiser, Shawna Martinez and Marie Porter and she had to be better than them. No questions asked. After a few hours and the training for the day had concluded- Anne was getting quicker and stronger and over-all better at everything she did by the day. She was becoming more fluid, less tense and she was almost there, she was almost ready for MSW. Of course she wasn't here yet because her dad wouldn't let her. It wasn't because he felt it was too dangerous for her or anything because the way he saw it? She's a Rowe, she's going to be great. But he knew the level of competition (being Co-Director of Talent Relations, along side of Frank Washington), she was going to have to step it up. When the training concluded it was their "daddy/daughter" time when they got to go out to eat, sit down and talk about everything. With her touring around the mid-west and some southern states on the east coast and Giant spending most of his time in Missouri when he's not at home (hence the Emerald Academy Training), this was their one time every week they could sit together and be a family. It was usually every 2-3 weeks when her mom came along because she didn't like to travel.
"So, Daddy-" she said. "Do you think I'm ready yet? And I want you to be brutally honest with me. This is where I want to be, and I only want to be here when I'm ready." The look in her face was this look of determination as she looked to her father for an answer. And he gave her one, not as talent relations, but as her father, an experienced vet in the business.
"First of all, let me just say how dang proud of you I am." he said with a smile. "Dadd--" she tried to speak before he stopped her, putting his hand up. "Now hang on a minute, sweetheart. Before you say anything- you've been training harder and harder every time. You've been wrestling in all of these places since you were 18 and every time you go back to them more and more determined and you've done it all on your own. So are you ready for MSW? Well, Anne, what do you think?" The question was flipped on her, and she didn't quite know how to respond.
"Well..." she paused a moment, taking a drink of her water at their table. "I think I am; Finally. Before it was intimidating, you know? But I think I'm ready." She nodded her head. She was convinced that this was her time now, and MSW is where she belonged to take her career to the next level.
"Well I'm glad you think that." He said in a tone that was almost like he was getting ready to set her up for disappointment so she got ready for the blow. "I'm glad you said that because I think you are too." And her eyes lit up like a child on Christmas. "Now don't get too excited yet. I can't just give you a contract because things don't work that way. My job is to scout the talent, help train the talent and give my word to the boss. Now, right now isn't a great time because Danny is getting ready to retire and Isaac is coming in from California to take over the company. So there's a lot of legal stuff going on right now."
Anne's head slouched a bit. If she couldn't get in now, who knew if, or when she could? "Don't give me those puppy dog eyes, little girl." He said jokingly towards her. "By the end of next month all the documents are going to be signed, and Isaac is going to be the boss. Once he's completely taken control and got things squared away and the show are starting to roll, we're going to get you to sit down with him, and myself and Frank, to ensure that everything is completely professional. We do this with everybody to ensure the professionalism is on both ends, you know, in case of rejection and all of that fun stuff. He's going to go over an interview process, get to know you a little bit and then he's going to have you do some things in the ring, probably work a match with some spots with some of the other incoming and local talents and then Isaac is going to make the final decision from there. I'll make the call to Danny, he'll get everything squared away with Isaac."
Her eyes lit up, the biggest smile she ever had came across her face and Anne practically leaped over the table to give him a hug. This is everything she worked for. All those years of him going harder on her than anybody else, setting the bar higher and higher for her to achieve each and every single time, it finally was paying off. "THANK YOU DADDY!"
He smiled too. How could he not? His baby girl was all grown up and she was making a name for herself and now she was about to step foot onto the biggest stage she's ever been on since he held her on his shoulders when she was 7. "Nothing is guaranteed here, Anne. We're planning to kick start the Women's division again sometime around early summer. There's going to be a lot of promotion for the revival of the division, the championship and we're planning to hire quite a few new women and quite possibly bring back some old ones, too. I know we've already got Kat and Artemis squared away, and Marie is coming back for the return show, too. So you're going to have your hands full. But if you can show Frank and Isaac what I've been seeing out of you each and every week? You're not going to have any problems. So until everything is finalized, if he accepts you or not, we're going to keep meeting up wherever we can and we're going to run through our drills until you get accepted. If not MSW, then somewhere even bigger."
He had such high hopes for her, but she had even higher hopes for herself. That standard bearing bar was so high, but she had to set it that way so that every day she had something new to fight for. "Well I appreciate it, really, Daddy, I do. I wouldn't be able to even be doing this if it wasn't for you so whether I'm accepted or not, I'm going to keep trying and keep getting better. I'm ging to be a star some day, as big as you and I'll have you to thank for it." She smiled. They stood from their seat as they had finished their meals and they hugged one more time. Anne had a gig in St. Louis later in the evening that she had to get on the road for. Giant had to go back home to Atlanta, he hadn't seen his wife all week, but he would start home in the morning. But first, he was going to sit ringside for his daughters match tonight in Dynamo Pro Wrestling.
>>>>>>> Fast Forward to the First Week of February, 2015. The Emerald Academy in Kansas City, MO.
Of course the Academy was only closed for sake of story. In fact they had even taken specific measures for the talent to be able to use it so that it would still keep up the appearance for sake of kayfabe. The girls would be working with Marie Porter, former MSW Women's title contender and one of the original Women of Tradition. Anne had already gone through the introductory process with Isaac (better known to the crowd and fans as IC3) and now it was ring time. Anne and all the other ladies, mostly locals but there were some faces that looked like some of the new signings as well (Anne just didn't have a chance to really get to know them at this time) were all working the same match with Marie and it came down to how well they took direction, how well they sold, and how they played to a character. Anne was full of charisma and energy and it showed with every hit, every movement that she made. Isaac could be at ringside, taking notes and nodding his head in approval and then in the ring after a few minutes of wrestling, Marie is showing stagger and Anne calls for her finish. She heads to the middle rope and jumps off, hooking Marie's head. They spin and Anne brought Marie down with impact with a Tornado DDT (You can see the exact version of the move here). Anne was known to call the DDT the "Flying Grayson." She made her cover on Marie and our referee counted the three. After the bell, Anne and Marie shook hands with a sign of respect and now it was up to Isaac to make his final decision.
>>>>>>> Fast Forward a few hours
Anne sat in the locker room at this moment, hours after her tryout and then a knock came on the door. Anne looked up and it was her father. "Hey sweetheart, Isaac wants to see you in the office." Anne didn't quite know how to take it but she pulled herself to her feet, butterflies in her stomach and she nodded. Her father put his arm around her shoulder and walked with her. "You did great out there. Marie said she was very impressed and would love to wrestle you sometime. That's a big compliment and if that carries over to Isaac, you got this. But no matter what happens here, we're going to keep working until the next tryout." She looked at him and nodded with approval. "I know, Daddy." Giant then knocked on the door, and there was a "Come In!" and so the door opened and he welcomed Anne into the office at the Academy. "I'll be right outside. Knock 'em dead babygirl."
"Miss Rowe.." She smiled and so did Isaac. On camera through Golden Gate Wrestling and even as we know him now, you would never have imagined that he'd smile. "Miss Rowe, I wanted to be the one to let you know person that I was very impressed. I was very impressed with all of you, to be fair. But you, Miss Rowe, I had my eyes on you. I was watching you a lot more closely than the other girls because I know who your father is, I know what he's accomplished and normally I wouldn't hold that to anybody except that I know he's been training you since the moment you he could. Marie even told me that she was very impressed, as well, so that meant a lot coming from her." He paused, however only for a moment as the tension in the room built and the sweat ran down the back of Anne's neck. "So you've got big shoes to fill, Miss Rowe, but I'm happy to say that you'll be filling them right here in Missouri State Wrestling! Welcome to the team. We're most certainly glad to have you. Now I'm sure your father told you, but early summer, maybe even a bit earlier, late May to early June, we're going to kickstart the Women's division again and I can't wait to have you be part of it. There's plenty of talent out there and I know all of you are going to be taking each other to all new heights. We'll be in touch. Have a great day Miss Rowe. Go celebrate, you earned it."
You Earned it. Those words meant so much to her because she did. All of her training and her ambition paid off. She took the next step in her career, the next level, MSW. her father was so proud. They shared a big hug and sometime in May, Anne would begin her journey. The months now passed, and on Saturday May 7th at Unstoppable #22 it was announced that she, along with others, would make her debut to start off the Women of Tradition's movement in MSW once again.
Unstoppable #23 - Saturday May 21st, 2016, Anne "Flying" Grayson debuts to take on Lexi Pryce.
